Are Seasonal Allergies Making You Miserable?

Posted · Add Comment

It’s pollen season, which means sneezing, sniffling, and coughing season for those with pollen allergies. Use some simple strategies to keep pollen outdoors, where it belongs.

Strategies to Keep Pollen Out

1.       Know when pollen counts in your area are high (check the pollen map)

2.       Keep your windows closed.

Note: A reminder that people need fresh air.  If you have an ERV or HRV, continue to run your system during allergy season.  Keep your intake screen clear of debris and frequently vacuum your internal ventilation system’s filters.

Don’t have a ventilation system?  Make your own filter fan:  just duct tape a box filter to a box fan (see below image), then place it in your window with the fan blowing in. Use cardboard to seal the sides to your window frame.

3.       Wipe off shoes upon entry, then leave them at the door.

4.       Take off coat and place in closet upon entry

5.       Don’t dry clothes outdoors when pollen counts are high

6.       Some pollen will still get indoors:  use stand-alone air cleaners to remove the pollen from your indoor air, especially in bedrooms (where you spend most of your time.)
