You Can Prevent Lung Cancer

Fixing radon problems in low-income Maine homes.

Help Us Prevent Lung Cancer Through Radon Mitigation

What we need: $6,000 to $14,000 annually to fix 4-8 homes for low-income families in Maine.

Why we need your help: Since the Fall of 2019, the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council has been partnering with other Maine nonprofits to test the radon-in-air levels of low-income homes in Maine.

Statewide testing data helps us estimate that between 4 and 8 of the homes we test will require mitigation, for a total expenditure of $6,000 to $14,000.

Your donation of any size takes us one step closer towards achieving that goal to protect vulnerable Maine families from lung cancer due to radon exposure.

Test your own home: If you’ve never tested your home for radon, or if you haven’t tested in the last 5 years, let us know, and we’ll send you a radon test kit.  (lab fees apply)

Participate in the annual Indoor Insanity 5k:  We host an annual indoor 5k in the winter.  Join the crowd and help us prevent lung cancer one lap at a time.  See:  https://maineindoorair.org/indoor-insanity-5k

About Radon

Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas that gets trapped in buildings and causes lung cancer. It is the #1 cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, and the #2 cause of lung cancer nationwide. 1/3 of the homes in Maine have elevated radon levels.

When 30 people give $50...

... then together we can protect one Maine family from lung cancer. The average cost to install a radon-in-air treatment system in a standard Maine home is $1,500. Radon-in-water systems are more. Please help us prevent lung cancer in Maine through your donation of any size.

Meet Dorothy

Dorothy is a homeowner in Benton, Maine. Dorothy is a lung cancer survivor who didn't realize her home had high radon levels. After her mitigation, which was paid for by the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council's radon mitigation fund, Dorothy's risk of radon exposure dropped significantly. "I am so grateful," said Dorothy, "It's such a relief to know my home won't make me sick again."

Meet David

David, a homeowner in Northport, Maine, has a friend to thank for raising his awareness of the risks of radon. "My neighbor was in the process of becoming a radon tester and mitigator. Because of his professional interest, I decided to test my own home," David said. "I was stunned when my numbers for both radon in the air and radon in the water came back so high. I didn't know what to do. Thank you, Maine Indoor Air Quality Council, for your help."

Windows That Bring Us Together

In 2019, the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council partnered with WindowDressers, another Maine nonprofit that provides removable interior window inserts to Maine homeowners for energy efficiency and comfort in winter. Deb, a Casco homeowner, had been worried for a long time about radon, especially now that she and her family are spending so much more time indoors. Thanks to this partnership, the Maine Indoor Air Quality Council was able to get a system installed that reduced Deb's radon in air levels down to 1.4 picocuries per liter.

Protect Your Own Family

You can't smell it. Or taste it. You can't tell by the type or size of your home, its foundation, or whether or not your neighbor has radon. There's only one way to protect your family from radon, and that is to TEST.

Test Your Home for Radon
